Trout fishing season starts earlier this year

Hunting and Fishing

Attention Crawford County anglers, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced earlier this week that trout fishing season is starting a bit earlier this year.

That means that you can head out to local streams, rivers, and lakes right now. The commission recommends that anglers still maintain social distancing protocol by staying at least 6 feet apart (about a fishing pole length apart), avoiding large gatherings, and wearing a mask.

If you’re looking to go out and enjoy the plethora of trout species that Pennsylvania has to offer, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

  • Trout usually frequent cold lakes and streams
  • The best time to fish trout in the spring is mid-day
  • There are two types of trout streams – stocked streams and wild trout streams. Streams will continue to be stocked throughout the Spring, a stocking schedule can be found here.

Additionally, if you don’t have a fishing license you can purchase a fishing license, boat launch permit, or renew a boat registration on the PA fish and boat commission official website. Anglers are allowed to show their license on a mobile phone.

With that in mind, here are some of the best trout fishing spots in Crawford county:

Creeks

  • French Creek

This creek is one of the most popular fishing destinations in Crawford County and for good reason – it features 89 species of fish and is one of the most ecologically diverse streams in the region.

  • Conneaut Creek

One of the most popular trout fishing locations in Crawford County as it’s stocked early and frequently.

  • Oil Creek

This creek is also stocked with trout. It’s a great spot for those of you who like to fish holdover trout, landing you a bigger fish.

Lakes

  • Conneaut Lake

One of the county’s largest glacier lakes, it’s a great place to take the boat out and fish wild trout.

  • Canadohta Lake

This lake is slept on by a lot of local anglers, but if you enjoy the solitude that fishing can bring, this is the place for you. The lake has one public launch that the Fish and Boat Commission maintains. Boats are limited to 10-horsepower.
